"From Fast to Ultra-Fast: The Biological World of Extreme Movement"
Abstract: The fastest movements in the biological world will be explored in the context of their biomechanics, evolutionary diversification and the trade-offs that come with extreme kinematic capabilities. The presentation will focus especially on the remarkable mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda) that wield hammers moving with the acceleration of a bullet and spears that can snag swimming fish. These remarkable biological feats will be considered not only for their inherent fascination and insights into biological and physical principles, but also for their inspiration of human-designed devices.
